ALGERİAN HASAN PASHA PARTİCİPATED İN THE SİEGE OF BELGRADE

In 1738, he entered the janissary center and joined the siege of Belgrade and, although he was still very young, he achieved great success. He had entered the army as he had aimed, but stayed away from the seas and fought on land.

 

THE EVENT THAT CHANGED HIS FATE

The event that changed his destiny was his decision to go from Istanbul to Algeria using a ship he bought with the money he earned. During the voyage, his ship was attacked by a Spanish warship off the Mediterranean Sea. Hasan Pasha was the winner of this war.

 

ALGERİAN GOT HİS NİCKNAME

Hasan Pasha, who set out from Istanbul with a single ship, approached the port of Algeria with two ships. Because of this success, he was given the title of 'Uncle of Algeria' and was appointed as the head of the "Tilimsan Sancak". He received the nickname "Algerian" because he was Tilimsan Bey. Hasan Pasha, who departed from Istanbul as an ordinary janissary, became one of the most respected ship captains when he set foot in Algeria.

 

THE OTTOMAN PASHA THAT TRAVELING WITH LION

During his time in North Africa, he started feeding a young male lion. As the lion grew, the bond between them became stronger and the nickname of Algerian Gazi Hasan Pasha  became ''Aslanli Pasha''. Wherever he went, he went with his lion on the chain leash and went to the ships he caught with his lion.

The legend of Aslanlı Pasha  soon began to be remembered with fear all over Europe and became known as the Ottoman Pasha who wandered with a lion This reputation has also been the subject of the work of European painters.

 

CALLED TO ISTANBUL, BEYLERBEYI RANK IS GIVEN

After 20 years of success in Algeria, he was recalled to Istanbul in 1761 and in a short time he was brought to important positions in the state administration.

In 1770, when all the ships in the Ottoman navy were burned in Çeşme by the Russians and the island of Limnos was besieged, he set off with 3000 soldiers and took the management of the castle and expelled the Russians from the region.

 

BECAME A KAPTAN-I DERYA

Following this success, he was given the title of 'Gazi' and was awarded the rank of 'Kaptan-ı Derya' and appointed as the head of the Ottoman navy. But there was no navy. He had a modern navy prepared in three years to replace the destroyed navy. Moreover, he covered most of the construction of the ships from his own pocket.

Cezayirli Hasan Pasha became famous in the Ottoman navy with his mustache he left since his youth. His unique style and mustache became a role model and inspiration for all soldiers during his lifetime.

CAPTURED AMERİCAN SHİPS

After taking command of the navy, he crushed numerous revolts and continued to fight in the seas. During this period, many American ships captured consecutively off the Mediterranean coast.

THE OTTOMAN PASHA THAT CONNECTED AMERİCA TO TAX

The navy of the United States, which was a new country at that time, was not in a position to fight the Ottoman Empire. For this reason, America accepted the Ottoman rule in the seas and the 'Tripoli Treaty' was signed.

With the agreement written in Ottoman and consisting of 22 articles, America agreed to give 12 thousand gold annually to the Ottoman Empire.

This agreement was the only foreign language agreement in American history, and it was the only American document to agree to pay taxes to a foreign state. Algerian Hasan Pasha also went down in history as the Ottoman Pasha, which binds America to taxes. 

 

THE ONLY CULTURAL HERİTAGE OF GAZİ HASAN PASHA MANSİON İN ÇANAKKALE

Gazi Hasan Pasha, whose life was always on the front, was at the age of 77. He was appointed as the grand vizier by Sultan Selim. He died a few months later in Shumen on March 19, 1790. Aslanlı Pasha, who was loyal to the state, diligent and did not spare his words, spent most of his assets on state affairs. Also known for his generosity, the pasha donated 12,000 bags of gold to the state for the expense of the Ottoman-Russian War. The Pasha, who developed the Ottoman Maritime, laid the foundations of today's Naval War Academy, established schools, built shipyards, barracks and mosques from his own pocket, could not leave any children behind; A Turkish warship was renamed the Algerian Hasan Pasha ship,  keeping its name alive.

Among the prominent historical monuments is the Cezayirli Hasan Pasha Barracks, the first example of the Ottoman Empire's modern barracks architecture in Istanbul Kasımpaşa, Algerian Hasan Pasha Mosque in Sariyer, The mansion he built and used as a secret accommodation area during expeditions. Gazi Hasan Pasha Mansion, located in the Üvecik Village of Çanakkale's Ezine District, draws attention as the only cultural heritage that has survived and conveys its story to the present day.
